Spring 2006

Seasonal Focus

Spring marks the beginning of ozone season, which means organizations everywhere are gearing up to advance clean air messages about the simple steps people can take to help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.

Our hope is that you'll help spread the word this season by incorporating It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air messages and materials into your outreach and education campaign. When you do, you'll be part of an important partnership that's reinforcing the value of a key It All Adds Up message—that taking simple steps to reduce congestion and air pollution is part of a vital national "movement."

It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air spring materials and messages—Care for your car, Care for yourself, and Spread the word—focus on the clean air benefits of good car maintenance and walking and biking for transportation. Best of all, these commercial-quality materials, which include updated favorites and brand new Spanish versions, are free. The spring collection includes:

  • Fact sheet with tips and statistics that you can use "as is" or incorporate into your collateral materials
  • Event/activity suggestions to stir up community participation in clean air initiatives
  • Flyer for promoting the spring tips at events and in mailings
  • Flash animation to post on your Web site and email to your network of contacts
  • Online quiz for you and your partners to post on your Web sites
  • Live-read radio ad scripts for you and your partners to sponsor on drive-time radio
  • Print ads (three) on vehicle maintenance for use in advertising and other outreach
  • Print ads (four) on walking and biking for use in advertising and other outreach
  • Outdoor and transit ads (four) on vehicle maintenance, walking, and biking, which your partners may want to sponsor
  • Press release template to announce your participation in the It All Adds Up program and encourage greater news coverage
  • Television ad on vehicle maintenance (English)
  • Television ad on vehicle maintenance (Spanish)
  • Television ad on alternate modes (English)
  • Television ad on alternate modes (Spanish)

There's a variety of national environmental, air quality, and transportation observances taking place this spring, which provide a host of great opportunities to wave the clean air flag, disseminate the materials and messages, and drive the message home. Relevant events and observances this spring include:

Also, when planning your ozone-season activities, keep in mind that spring is the ideal time to identify your outreach objectives and gather some important baseline information. With just a few clicks you'll find a set of tools to conduct a complete evaluation of your public awareness program and get the important data you need to demonstrate success. It All Adds Up offers the following evaluation tools:

  • An easy-to-use process evaluation workbook that will help you set your objectives and track your activities
  • A telephone survey that will help you measure the impact of your public education efforts
  • A short version of the survey that you can use to get a snap shot of your target audience's awareness and attitudes.
  • A Webinar—a video tutorial synched to a PowerPoint presentation and transcript—that outlines the different levels of evaluation research and gives tips on conducting your own research, tracking your activities, and measuring your impact.

We'd love to hear from you about how It All Adds Up materials are used in your community as well as the progress you've made in reaching your audiences this season. Also, please let us know if you have ideas for the future so we can continue to improve the initiative. Just send us a note!

Our Commitment to You

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will continue its efforts to introduce and promote new and updated materials on www.ItAllAddsUp.gov and will remain committed to contacting our Community Partners to solicit comments and feedback on the It All Adds Up initiative. We'll also offer assistance, such as customizing the Flash animation and print materials, and answering any questions our Partners might have about using the evaluation tools, materials, and other resources we provide.

FHWA works with a variety of national organizations to promote the It All Adds Up messages and obtain resources and information to share with our Community Partners. Some of the groups we'll be working with this spring include the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, American Lung Association, Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Car Care Council, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, League of American Bicyclists, National Association of Regional Councils, State and Territorial Air Pollution Program Administrators and Association of Local Air Pollution Control Officials, and U.S. Department of Energy's Clean Cities Program.

Thank you for your participation in the It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air initiative and best wishes for a successful spring season!
