Summer 2006

Seasonal Focus

Warm summer days certainly have a way of getting people to move.

Whether we're biking, rowing, walking, or simply lounging by the pool, many of us are outdoors enjoying vacations and other activities, which means millions of cars are also on the move transporting people to America's countless trails, lakes, parks and beaches.

It's no wonder summer is commonly associated with ozone. Right now, sunlight and hot temperatures are at their strongest, heating up emissions and polluting the air.

So isn't it time for drivers in every community to understand the important air-quality benefits of proper car maintenance and refueling -- and fuel-efficiency? It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air summer-themed materials are an easy, economical way for you to convince residents, in a positive tone, that their transportation choices really can make a difference.

The commercial-quality It All Adds Up materials come in a variety of formats. Use them to remind drivers that it's best to refuel when it's cool, not top off the tank, practice good car maintenance, avoid engine idling, and buy or rent a low-emission or fuel-efficient vehicle. The complete summer collection includes:

This summer and fall a variety of national, regional, and local observances, conferences, and activities are occurring to raise awareness about air quality and traffic congestion. Why not take those opportunities to spread the word about the simple steps people can take to help clean the air and reduce traffic congestion? Here are two national conferences for transportation demand management professionals where air quality educators are very welcome:

  • 2006 Association for Commuter Transportation International Conference, Boston, MA; August 27-30, 2006. From incentives to marketing, measurement, public policy and emergency preparedness, sessions will cover a range of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) topics. Attendees from city, state, local governments, MPOs, universities, Transportation Management Associations, and large employers attend, speak, and share lessons learned, best practices, and trends in TDM. The conference will also include exhibits, tours of Boston transportation resources, and social functions. For more information and to register, please visit http://www.actweb.org.
  • Annual Telework Conference, Washington, DC; September 26, 2006. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and the Washington Metropolitan Telework Centers will again sponsor this annual telework conference. Topics include metrics of telework-calculation technology, employee productivity and operational benefits, and incorporating telework into your organization's flexible work portfolio. The general conference begins early in the morning and is open to all registrants. In the afternoon, GSA is hosting a Federal Interagency Telework Policies Workshop, which is open to U.S. government employees only. More information and the agenda are available at http://workingfromanywhere.org. Questions should be directed to Bob Smith at ITACDirector@worldatwork.org.
